South Bay Adult Education

About Us

The South Bay area of Los Angeles is home to approximately 58,000 residents, with an estimated  20 percent in need of programs or services that prepare them for college or equip them with skills to help them find a better- paying job. The consortium covers a strip of south Los Angeles County running from Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach east through working-class, higher-poverty and industrial areas, including Torrance, Hawthorne, Lawndale, Inglewood and several smaller adjacent communities. Consortium members include Centinela Valley Unified School District, El Camino Community College District, Inglewood Unified School District, Redondo Beach Unified School District, and Torrance Unified School District. SBAEC’s region is the El Camino Community College District which covers approximately 60 square miles of Southern Los Angeles County.

Centinela Valley Union High School DistrictCentinela Valley Union High School District is located in Lawndale, California, approximately 20 miles southwest of Los Angeles. The district’s three comprehensive high schools, continuation school, and independent study school serves over 6,500 students in grades 9-12. The district serves four feeder districts: Hawthorne Elementary, Lawndale Elementary, Lennox Elementary, and Wiseburn Elementary. The Centinela Adult Education program currently works with concurrently enrolled students, the parents of Hawthorne and Lawndale Elementary Districts, and St. Margaret’s Catholic Charities.

El Camino Community College DistrictEl Camino College, founded in 1947, is located in Torrance, California. The district’s service area encompasses 5 unified school districts, 12 elementary school districts, and includes 9 cities (including El Segundo, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Inglewood, Lawndale, Lennox, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, and Torrance) – all serving a population of nearly 2.5 million people. The college enrolls more than 25,000 students each semester and boasts a curriculum of over 850 highly regarded academic and career programs taught by an exceptional faculty. El Camino is one of the larger comprehensive 2-year community colleges in California, offering academic and vocational educational programs to a diverse student population.

Inglewood Unified School DistrictThe Inglewood Career Technical Education, Adult Education, Alternative Education School, as part of the Inglewood Unified School District (IUSD), has been serving their local community since 1955. The mission of IUSD is to foster all students into thoughtful, literate adults, possessing the academic, social and technical skills necessary to think critically, solve problems, and successfully pursue academic and career goals, becoming effective, responsible citizens and life-long learners. Current offerings include GED preparation courses at the Adult School facility, and multilevel English as a Second Language (ESL) courses day and evening classes which are offered at various locations.

Redondo Beach Unified School DistrictServing over 8,000 students, the Redondo Beach Unified School District (RBUSD) consists of eight elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school, one continuation school, and one adult school. The South Bay Adult School has been part of the Redondo Beach community since 1918 and offers a wide variety of classes for adults wishing to extend their learning. RBUSD is dedicated to providing every student the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in a global society, today and in the future. Current class offerings at South Bay Adult School include English as a Second Language, Career Technical training, High School Diploma courses, and Adult Basic Education classes.

Torrance Unified School DistrictTorrance Unified School District (TUSD) encompasses 30 schools ranging from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, serving nearly 23,000 students. TUSD has an exceptional teaching staff and maintains some of the highest student test scores in the South Bay. Torrance Adult School (TAS), also under the direction of the TUSD, has three sites, which brings the district total to 33 schools. TAS serves over 8,000 students each year and offers short term career pathways including Pharmacy Technician, Medical Assistant and Medical Billing and Coding, along with a range of English as a Second Language and Citizenship classes.
